MADRE and our sister organizations join millions in the US and around the world in congratulating Barack and Michelle Obama and all who helped bring about last night’s historic victory.
This election is of course a watershed for all those who fought for civil rights and against racism in the United States; an election 400 years in the making. As some of our Indigenous sisters would say, “today, the ancestors are smiling.”
Barack Obama’s victory also carries a special meaning for those whose lives are still circumscribed by discrimination of all sorts today—not only in the United States, but around the world.
For the women of MADRE’s sister organizations this election proved that discrimination can be overcome. Our sisters in Nicaragua, Iraq, Palestine, Colombia, Cuba, Kenya, Sudan and elsewhere are reminded that the United States can be more than the sum of its past unjust policies. Transformation is possible.
We need that powerful truth, that infusion of hope to sustain our work for human rights and to bolster our belief that we will change the terrible conditions we see in the world.
MADRE looks forward to supporting the leadership of President Obama in promoting human rights and social justice at home and abroad. And we commit ourselves to holding the Obama administration accountable to the highest standards of human rights and international law.
Last night we saw that the United States can be a place of extraordinary transformation and possibility. But this victory is not the end of a historic struggle. It is a place to catch our breath and celebrate and keep right on going. That’s what MADRE intends to do. As we have for the past 25 years, MADRE will be there for the next four, reminding President Barack Obama that he was absolutely right when he said that, “Change doesn’t come from Washington. Change comes to Washington.”
Lo logramos pero la lucha continua
MADRE y nuestras organizaciones hermanas nos unimos a millones de personas en los Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo para felicitar a Barack y Michelle Obama y a todos aquellos que colaboraron a con el logro de la victoria histórica de anoche.
Esta elección es claramente un momento histárico para todos los que han luchado por los derechos civiles y en contra del racismo en los Estados Unidos; es una elección que tomó 400 años de construcción. Como diría una de nuestras hermanas Indígenas: “hoy, los ancestros están sonriendo.”
La victoria de Barack Obama también lleva un sentido especial para las personas cuyas vidas están todavía limitadas por causa de la discriminación de todo tipo, no solo en los Estados Unidos, pero también en el mundo entero.
Para las mujeres de las organizaciones hermanas de MADRE esta elección ha demostrado que se puede superar la discriminación. Para nuestras hermanas en Nicaragua, Irak, Palestina, Colombia, Cuba, Kenia, Sudán y en otros lugares, esta elección reconfirma que los Estados Unidos puede ser más que la suma de sus previas políticas injustas. Una transformación es posible.
Necesitamos esta verdad poderosa, esta infusión de esperanza para sostener nuestro trabajo en la defensa de los derechos humanos y para fortalecer nuestra creencia que cambiaremos las terribles condiciones que vemos en el mundo.
MADRE espera poder apoyar el liderazgo del Presidente Obama en la promoción de los derechos humanos y la justicia social a nivel nacional e internacionalmente. Y nos comprometemos en hacer a la administración Obama responsable a los niveles más altos de los derechos humanos y la ley internacional.
Anoche vimos que los Estados Unidos puede ser un lugar extraordinario de transformación y de posibilidades. Pero esta victoria no es el final de una lucha histórica. Es un momento para recuperar las energías, celebrar y seguir adelante. Esto es lo que MADRE intenta hacer. Como hemos hecho por los últimos 25 años, MADRE estará presenta en los próximos cuatro años, recordándole al Presidente Barack Obama que el estaba absolutamente en lo correcto cuando afirmó: “El cambio no viene de Washington. El cambio llega a Washington.”
This is my first time on your blog but I have known about MADRE for years...I hear you and I firmly support the expression "Yes We Did but We’re Not Done". As the world rejoices over OBAMA's victory let us bring change to everything we do and then the bells of freedom will ring throughout the world. Peace!
