When news of the coup broke, grassroots organizations of Honduras took to the streets to demand the reinstatement of the democratically-elected President.
As our friends at Via Campesina point out, "The government of President Zelaya has defended the rights of working people and peasant farmers, has joined the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), and in general has implemented policies that have been positive for Honduran peasant and family farmers."
The coup is led by wealthy, right-wing Hondurans, who want to see government policies that favor the interests the multi-national corporations rather than the country's poor majority.
